O Hóquei em Portugal tem uma tradição mais forte enquanto modalidade masculina, mas de ano para ano a situação tem sofrido gradualmente uma evolução no sentido de as equipas femininas ganharem maior consistência em termos nacionais e logicamente uma maior relevância competitiva em termos internacionais.
Nem mesmo o habitual saudosismo em relação ao passado consegue justificar alguns pensamentos menos positivos, estamos a passar a melhor fase de sempre do hóquei feminino em Portugal e isso fica bem expresso na oportunidade que a EHF concedeu ao nosso país em organizar este Campeonato Europeu de sub 21 na variante de sala, que será complementado em Junho com o Europeu de Campo agora para sub 18.
E a prova de que se vive um novo enquadramento da modalidade é que existem jogadoras com idades abaixo das seniores e que pela primeira vez vai ser possível participar num campeonato europeu de campo. Mas o Hóquei, apesar desta leitura positiva, não foge à grande crise porque passam as modalidades colectivas de uma forma genérica em Portugal. Há falta de adesão por parte dos jovens e os clubes não conseguem encontrar estratégias para ultrapassar tanta dificuldade imposta por um novo quadro socioeconómico.
Aliás é mais que justo que se refira, neste contexto, que tem sido as autarquias, muitas vezes com os seus “braços armados” Empresas Públicas ou afins, que vão conseguindo dinamizar e manter o cada vez mais reduzido número de clubes e categorias etárias em competição. Só graças ao apoio da Câmara Municipal de Guimarães e da Tempo Livre foi possível levar a cabo a realização deste Campeonato. A Federação Portuguesa de Hóquei reconhece o papel essencial que a parceria com a Tempo Livre teve na efectivação deste sonho de permitir às nossas jovens atletas a possibilidade de competirem ao melhor nível, com a oportunidade de o fazerem com o apoio dos seus familiares, amigos e colegas.
Estamos certos que este campeonato será um êxito organizativo e de afirmação da cidade de Guimarães como anfitriã e esperamos que dentro em breve o Hóquei passe também a ter um clube para todos os que se apaixonarem por esta maravilhosa modalidade.
A FPH agradece a todas as jogadoras que se envolveram neste programa de preparação que teve inicio em Setembro de 2008 assim como à equipa técnica, aos Directores da Federação que acompanharam todo o programa e a todo o pessoal técnico da Federação. O vestir a camisola das quinas é hoje, na Federação de Hóquei, um longo, complexo e muito participado processo, por isso qualquer que sejam os resultados a alcançar em Guimarães, a qualidade do trabalho desenvolvido já é em si mesma uma estrondosa vitória.

Hockey in Portugal has a stronger tradition in Men competition, but year by year this situation has suffered gradually an evolution and the Women teams have gained more consistency at national level and obviously a bigger importance at international level.
Not even the usual nostalgic feeling for the time past does justify some less positive thoughts, we are now experiencing the best phase ever of the Women Hockey in Portugal and this is well expressed in the opportunity that the EHF gave to our country to organise this European Indoor U21 event, that will be complemented in July with the EuroHockey Youth Nations Challenge (U18 Girls).
And the demonstration that we have a new perspective of the game is that we have now affiliated players with age groups under seniors and that for the first time it will be possible to participate in the EuroHockey Youth Nations Challenge U18. However, in spite of this positive view Hockey is not immune to the big crises that all the collective sports suffer in a generic way in Portugal. There is a lack of adhesion by the youngest and the clubs do not succeed in finding strategies to overcome so many difficulties imposed by a new social-economical reality.
As a matter of fact, it is more than fair that we mention, in this context, that has been the
Autarchies, many times with their “armed arms” Public Companies or similar, who are making their best to urge and to keep the each more reduced number of clubs and age groups in competition. Only thanks to the support of the Town Hall of Guimarães and the Tempo Livre it was possible to accomplish the organisation of this event. The Portuguese Hockey Federation recognises the essential role that the partnership with the Tempo Livre had in the concretisation of this dream which allows our young athletes the possibility of competing at the best level with the opportunity to do it with the support of their love ones, friends and colleagues.
We are sure that this Championship will be an organizational success and the affirmation of Guimarães as host and we hope that in short term the Hockey can have also a club for all those who will fall in love with this wonderful game.
The FPH thanks all the players who have been involved in this preparation program that has began in early September 2008 as well as to the technical staff and the Members of the Board of the Federation. To dress up the shirt of quinas it is today, at the Portuguese Hockey Federation, a long and complex and very participated process, hence no matter the results we will achieve in Guimarães, the quality of the work developed it is already itself a magnificent victory.
